There are two theories about the origin of the name “Fengtai”. One theory is that the name “Fengtai” comes from a combination of characters, taking one character each from the Jin Dynasty’s “Fengyi Gate” and the “Baijiaotai” to form the name “Fengtai”. The other theory is that it is a homophone: there was a “Yuanfengtai” during the Jin Dynasty and a “Fengtai Village” during the Ming Dynasty, which derives a homophone of “Fengtai”. Fengtai District has a long history and rich cultural resources. More than 3,000 years ago, Jicheng, the capital of the Yan, was constructed based on Lianhuachi water system. Mr. HOU Renzhi, a famous historical geographer, once proposed the theory that “Lianhuachi came first, followed by Beijing”. The glory of Zhongdu in the Jin dynasty more than 860 years ago kicked off the history of Beijing as the capital. The Lugou Bridge is the oldest and longest eleven-arch stone bridge in North China, and it is also known worldwide as the Marco Polo Bridge. Wanping City was constructed during the Ming Dynasty and is the only well-preserved two-gate city in northern China. Nanyuan, the imperial garden of five dynasties, has become the conservation place for the ecological culture of the ancient capital. It boasts a profound cultural heritage of traditional Chinese opera and flower culture. Besides, the brand influence of characteristic cultural activities such as the Chinese Opera Culture Week and Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Fair of the “Flowers Blooming in Fengtai” is becoming increasingly prominent.

The red gene of revolution and struggle is passed on like a spark. Changxindian, praised as “Red Star of the North”, has witnessed the largest and most influential strike of the Beijing-Hankou railway workers during the first heyday of the Chinese workers’ movement and gave birth to early communist organizations. Lugouqiao-Wanping City has witnessed the July 7 Incident of 1937, which rallied the whole nation to resist the Japanese invasion, and has become the memorial site for important national events and the base for patriotic education.
