The origin of Fengtai’s administrative division derived from the period of the Republic of China. At that time, it was a special district of Wanping County, governing Fengtai Town and the townships of Kandan, Yonghezhuang and Xiaotun. In early 1949, Beiping was peacefully liberated, after which district people’s governments were established in Fengtai, Changxindian, and Nanyuan. In April of the same year, Beiping was divided into 32 districts: Nanyuan area as the 23rd district of Beiping, Fengtai area as the 25th district, and Changxindian area as the 26th district. In June of the same year, Beiping City made another adjustment to the administrative division, from 32 districts to 26 districts. A portion of the 14th district (based in Nanyuan), the 15th district (based in Fengtai), and a portion of the 18th district (based in Changxindian) were located within the current Fengtai District and the southwestern part still belonged to Liangxiang and Fangshan counties in Hebei Province. In 1952, “Fengtai District” was officially named and has remain until now regardless of a series of adjustments.
