During the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, the Fengtai area belonged to the countryside of the capital of ancient Beijing, namely Jicheng. At the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, it belonged to Jicheng, and later to the Yan state.

In Qin Dynasty, Jixian County was established.

During the Western Han Dynasty, Yinxiang County was established in the southern part of Jixian County, and its government was located in Yinxiang City, which was located in modern Baotai. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, Yinxiang County was dissolved, and its territory was reincorporated into Jixian County.

In the second year of the Jianzhong era of the Tang Dynasty (781), the western part of Jixian County was divided into Youdu County. The central part of modern Fengtai District (Lugouqiao Township and HuaTownship) belonged to Youdu County at the time and the eastern part (Nanyuan Township) belonged to Jixian County.

In the first year of Huitong era of Liao Dynasty (938), Jixian County was renamed Jibei County. And in the first year of the Kaitai era (1012), Yudu and Jibei County were renamed Wanping and Xijin.

In Jin Dynasty, Xijin was renamed Daxing.

During the Yuan Dynasty, nowadays Nanyuan Township in the eastern part of Fengtai belonged to Daxing County at the time, while the southern part of Beigong in the west belonged to Liangxiang County at the time, and most of the area in between belonged to Wanping County at the time.

During the Ming Dynasty, the Nanyuan Township to the east of today’s You’anmen belonged to Daxing County.The area around Wangzuo in the west and the northern part of Dahuichang belonged to Fangshan County. The area south of Wangzhuang and Guaicun Village belonged to Liangxiang County.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the area east of Fengtai Township and north of Dahongmen was designated as an urban district.

In June 1928, the eastern part of Fengtai District belonged to the southern suburbs, while the central and western parts belonged to Wanping County, Fangshan County and Liangxiang County.

In January 1949, Fengtai, Changxindian, Nanyuan, and nearby areas were incorporated into Beiping City, and district-level people’s governments were subsequently established. In April of the same year, Beiping City was divided into districts in accordance with a uniform standard. The 23rd District was formed with the incorporation of Nanyuan, the 25th District with the incorporation of Fengtai, and the 26th District with the incorporation of Changxindian. In June of the same year, the former 15th District and the 23rd District were merged to form the 14th District. The southern part of the former 16th District was incorporated into the 25th District to become the 15th District. The former 26th District was renamed the 18th District.

In June 1950, the 18th District of Beijing (Changxindian), which had been established, was abolished and merged into the 15th District. This decision was approved by Government Administration Council of the Central People’s Governmentand reported by the Beijing Municipal People’s Government. In August of the same year, the Beijing Municipal People’s Government made the decision to connect the names of the suburbs with the urban area. As a result, the original 14th District (Nanyuan) became the 11th District, while the 15th District (Fengtai) became the 12th District.

In 1952, Wanping County was abolished and replaced by Fengtai District, Nanyuan District, and Shijingshan District. These districts are now subordinate to Beijing Municipality.

In 1958, most of Nanyuan District and Shijingshan District were merged into Fengtai District.

In July 1963, the municipal Shijingshan Office was established. Five streets, Beixin’an, Jindingjie, Pingguoyuan, Guangningfen, and Xingucheng, were transferred from Fengtai District to the Shijingshan Office.

In August 1967, the administrative system of Shijingshan District was restored, and Shijingshan Commune was divided out of Fengtai District.

At the end of 1990, the westernmost point of the district was Ma’anshan (116°4′ east longitude) and the easternmost point was Dongsidaokou Village (116°28′ east longitude), with a distance of 35 kilometers. The southernmost point is the southern boundary of Hezhaoyun Village (39°46′ north latitude) and the northernmost point is the Beixinkaiqu in Qingtai Village (39°54′), with the widest point of 14 kilometers from north to south.
